OBRS Local Historian
Suzanne Mendonça
Suzanne Tarpey Mendonça, a lifelong resident of Oakland Beach, who has been appointed as the Local Historian for the Oakland Beach Revival Society.
Few people know this neighborhood as deeply as Suzanne, and we are excited to welcome her to the board. She has lived in Oakland Beach her entire life—first in her family’s home on Sea View Drive, and now just a short distance away in her own home by the beach.
Her family has been part of the community for nearly 100 years, meaning the stories of Oakland Beach have always been part of her everyday life. Growing up, Suzanne spent years listening to family members and longtime neighbors share memories of storms, summers, and the way the shoreline and community once were. These early experiences sparked a lasting appreciation for the neighborhood’s history.
While in college, Suzanne began independently exploring the history of Oakland Beach in greater depth. As a member of both the Oakland Beach Carousel Foundation and the Oakland Beach Association, she started researching historic city maps, local lore, and long-circulated stories passed down through generations. Along the way, she preserved newspaper articles by Don D’Amato in The Beacon, which documented important pieces of Oakland Beach history, and built a meaningful collection of vintage postcards that capture the neighborhood across different eras.
Suzanne’s connection to Oakland Beach is both personal and enduring. Her work is driven by a simple goal: to preserve the stories, images, and lived experiences of the community so that future generations can understand and appreciate the rich history of Oakland Beach
